English : Some environmental and physiological problems affecting Egyptian buffalos performance.
Arabic : بعض المشاكل البيئية و الفسيولوجية المؤثرة على اداء الجاموس المصرى.
Abstract I-The objectives of the study could be summarized as follows : 1- Study of productive and reproductive traits for Egyptian buffaloes and environmental and physiological factors affecting it. 2- Determination of costs and returns of the farm and profit or loss with its reasons. 3- Describing how could management affect productive and reproductive traits. II-The materials and methods used in the study could be summarized as follows: 4- Using the productive , reproductive and economic records of the Egyptian buffaloes herd raised at Mahalet Moussa Experimental farm , belonging to Animal Production Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt. 5- The present study included 5417 records for productive and reproductive traits convering a period of 25 years started 1965. 6- 1250 samples of milk were collected from buffaloes in various parities to estimate the Fat % , throughout 1990- 1992. 7- Economic records included costs and returns of the farm covering the period from 1989/90- 1993/94 . · The data were analysed by least squares and maximum likelihood program (Harvey, 1990). III- The most important results of the study could be summarizes as follows: A- Reproductive traits :The overall least squares means for , birth weight , weaning weight, age at first calving, weight at calving ,service period and calving interval were:35.6 kg, 87.35 kg , 39.9 months , 512.2 kg , 181.5 days and 496.3days. All of these traits were affected significantly by year of calving , parity and season of calving (not age at first calving). B- Productive traits :The overall least squares means for total milk yield , 305- day milk yield, lactation period , dry period and fat % were : 1525.2 kg, 1460.5 kg, 254.6 days , 205.1 days and 5 % . All of these traits were affected by year of calving , season of calving and parity. C- Economic traits : This data included costs and returns of the farm convering the period from 1989/90 – 93/94. In these years , the farm was exposed to big loss, due to retarted age at first calving ,prolonged service period, low milk production with low selling price and price of lost weaned calves. It is concluded that miss management is extremely harmful to dairy production. Key words: buffaloes, economic, environmental, reproductive, productive.
