Abstract |
Vegetables are a good source of dietary fiber, phytonutrients, provitamins, antioxidants, polyphenols and minerals. The aim of the current study is using the water extract of okra and cucumber and their mixture to improve the elderly health. Therefore, the study was carried out by supplying elderly male rats with okra and cucumbers water extract by stomach tube for 6 weeks. The biochemical and histological parameters were investigated to monitor the healthy effects of okra and cucumber. The chemical components of okra and cucumber water extracts were fractionated and identified to show the phenoleic and isoflavones compounds amounts which have antioxidant and healthy effects. The okra and cucumber water extracts can improve the physical properties and vital characteristics of the tested parameters. Some of these effects were decreased and improved the biochemical analysis such as total lipids, liver functions (ALK, ALT, and AST). Kidney functions (uric acid and creatinen) were slightly affected. Blood picture and white blood cells differentials were, also, estimated to show the effect of okra and cucumber on blood constituents. The examination of liver and kidney rat tissues showed no histopathological changes as a result of okra and cucumber water extract supplying via stomach tube in relative to basal diet. It could be concluded that water extract of okra and cucumber and their mixture had protective and healthy effects, because, it had natural antioxidants, such as phenols and isoflavones which improve the health effects on elderly. Therefore, such foodstuffs are regularly recommended to include in elderly diets.
