Abstract In recent years, the use of foods with perceived health protective effects (i.e. functional foods ) has received considerable attention for reducing disease risk. Aqueous extract of Cassia fistula fruits (AECFF) with different concentrations was tested in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Five groups of diabetic rat received 5 ,7.5 , 10, 12.5 and 15% of AECFF compared with normal control group (non diabetic rats) and positive control group (diabetic rats) for sixty days. Growth of rats, biochemical biomarks and histopathological examination were estimated. Results obtained showed that the streptozotocine induced significantly decrease in body weight, insulin level, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxides (GPx) activities, high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total protein, albumin and uric. In the contrast, relative weight of liver, kidney, spleen and heart, serum glucose, GST activity, malondialdehyd (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, alanine aminoransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and creatinine were significantly increased in positive control rats group. Different concentrations of AECFF significantly decreased the effect of STZ on the tested parameters and improved the insulin secretion and lowed the glucose level in rat serum to be close the negative effect of STZ. Therefore, it has the potential to be administrated AECFF, especially concentration of 10% and up to manage the hyperglycemia.
