Abstract The present work was conducted during two successive seasons (2008/2009 and 2009/2010) at Kafr El-Hamam Agric. Res. Station, ARC, El-Sharkia governorate to study the effect of intercropping flax in various densities (33, 50 and 67% of solid flax planting density) with 100% sugar beet and two solid culture of both crops under three nitrogen levels (50,70 and 90kg N/fed) and three potassium rates (24, 36 and 48 kg K2O/fed) as well as their interactions. In addition, to study the effect of nitrogen level on chemical and technological properties of flax seeds, physical and organoleptic properties of the biscuits produced from supplementation linseed meal with wheat flour at different levels. A split split-plot design, with four replicates was used. Increasing nitrogen fertilizer levels from 50 to 70 up to 90 kg N/fed significantly increased yield and yield components of both sugar beet and flax crops. Chemical composition of defatted flaxseed at varying levels of defatted flaxseed flour was significantly affected by nitrogen levels until 90 kg N/fed compared with the control treatment. Results indicated that the nitrogen levels had greater effect in protein content of flaxseed treatment until 90% kg N/ fed. compared with control treatment. The highest value of thickness of biscuit was obtained from supplementing with 20% defatted flaxseed. Moreover, there was significantly decrease in the biscuits supplemented with 20% defatted flaxseed for mouth feel. All the studied characters of sugar beet and flax crops were significantly increased by increasing K rates from 24 to 36 up to 48kg K2O/fed. Intercropping of 100% sugar beet + 67% flax recorded the highest values of sucrose % and sugar yield / fed as well as most straw and seed characters of flax, LER, ATER and CR values. In the some time intercropping can be obtained the highest income return from yield of flax and sugar beet intercropped. The estimated correlation coefficient (r) were positively and highly significant correlated between sugar yield/fed and each of root length, root yield/fed, T.S.S. and sucrose percentages. Flax fiber yield / fed was positive and highly significant associated with total and technical length/ plant, straw yield/plant, straw yield/fed, fiber yield/ plant, fiber % and fiber length. Flax seed yield/fed was positive and highly significant associated with no. of capsules /plant, no of seeds /capsule, 1000 seed weight, seed yield /plant and oil yield / fed. The results of path analysis revealed that sucrose %, root fresh weight / plant and their interaction were the most effective in contributing to sugar yield / fed. Also flax fiber yield / plant and the interaction between fiber yield/plant and technical length/plant were the most effective in contribution to fiber yield/ fed. Seed yield / plant, 1000 seed weight and their interaction produced strong direct and indirect effect on seed yield / fed.
